American Traditional Tattoo Artist in Naples, Florida

American Traditional is where I started. I'm Chris Buckholts, and I've been tattooing since 2009, when I began my apprenticeship in Cortez, Colorado, learning the foundations of American Traditional and working as a walk-in tattooer. Today I tattoo at Webbworks Tattoo Studio in Naples, where I've been since September 2013, and clients come from Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Marco Island and all over Southwest Florida.

I was drawn to Traditional for the same reasons people still get it today: it's bold, it's readable from across the room and it holds up. Bold lines, a limited palette and solid color are built to last, which is the thing I care about most in any tattoo.

What is American Traditional tattooing?

American Traditional (also called "Old School" or "Traditional") grew out of early 20th century American tattoo shops, especially in port towns where sailors and servicemen got tattooed. The look is unmistakable: heavy black outlines, solid shading, a tight palette of red, green, yellow and black, and simple, iconic imagery that reads clearly at a glance.

Those design rules aren't just an aesthetic. They're why Traditional tattoos age so well. Thick lines hold their shape as skin changes, and solid color stays strong for decades. A good Traditional tattoo still looks like itself 20 years later.

Classic Traditional designs and what they mean

  • Rose: love, beauty and remembrance. The most versatile flash image there is.
  • Panther: strength and ferocity, often climbing the arm with claws out.
  • Dagger: bravery and sacrifice. A dagger through a rose is a classic pairing of love and pain.
  • Sacred heart: devotion, faith and love.
  • Eagle: freedom and power.
  • Clipper ship and swallow: sailor imagery tied to travel, safe passage and returning home.
  • Skull: mortality and living without fear.
  • Lady heads and pin-ups: some of the most iconic Traditional portraits, usually framed with flowers or a headdress.
  • Horseshoes, dice and cards: luck.

Some clients pick straight from classic flash. Others want a custom piece that keeps the Traditional rules but tells their own story. Both are great, and both get drawn to fit your body.

Single pieces, patchwork sleeves and back pieces

Single pieces

Traditional is perfect for a standalone tattoo, whether it's your first or your fifteenth. A rose on the forearm or a panther on the shoulder can usually be finished in one sitting.

Patchwork sleeves

A collection of individual Traditional pieces built up over time, with spacing planned so the arm still looks balanced. If you're starting a patchwork sleeve, it helps to think about placement early so later pieces fit.

Full Traditional sleeves and back pieces

Larger compositions, like a clipper ship and eagle across the back, take multiple sessions. I bring the same planning I use for large Japanese work to big Traditional pieces so everything flows.

Traditional vs. Neo-Traditional vs. Japanese

People mix these up all the time, so here's the short version:

  • American Traditional: bold outlines, limited palette, simple iconic subjects. Built for longevity.
  • Neo-Traditional: keeps the bold outlines but adds more detail, a wider color range and more illustrative shading.
  • Japanese: large-scale compositions designed for the whole body, with backgrounds like waves and wind bars and imagery rooted in Japanese folklore. It's my main focus today. See my Japanese tattoo work.

Cover-ups with Traditional tattoos

Cover-ups are one of my specialties. Traditional designs can work well for covering an old tattoo because the bold black and saturated color have the strength to hide what's underneath. Whether a cover-up works depends on the size, placement and how dark the original is. Sometimes laser lightening is recommended first. We'll go over your options at your free consultation.

How it works

  • Free consultation: bring your idea, flash you like or a story you want to tell. Walk-ins and consultations are welcome, ideally around 11 a.m.
  • Deposit and drawing: a deposit books your appointment and covers the custom drawing.
  • Tattoo day: smaller pieces are often done in a few hours. Larger work is split into sessions.
  • Aftercare: stay out of the Gulf, pools and hot tubs and keep it out of the sun for about two weeks. After that, sunscreen keeps Traditional color bright for years.
  • Touch-ups: free as needed.

I'm at Webbworks Tattoo Studio in Naples Tuesday through Saturday.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the best American Traditional tattoo artist in Naples or Southwest Florida?

Look for clean, bold linework, solid color that's packed in evenly and healed photos that still look sharp. I started my career in American Traditional in 2009 and it's still one of my two main styles. Check my portfolio and reviews to see if my work fits what you want.

Do American Traditional tattoos age well?

Yes. That's one of the main reasons the style exists. Bold outlines and solid color hold up far better over time than thin lines and soft shading, especially with good aftercare and sunscreen.

Can I bring in flash or a design I found online?

Yes. Bring it as a reference and I'll draw a version that fits your body and placement.

How much does an American Traditional tattoo cost?

Every tattoo is custom, so price depends on size, detail and placement. You'll get a quote at your free consultation before anything is booked.

Can I get a Traditional tattoo the same day?

Sometimes. Walk-ins are welcome, ideally around 11 a.m., and smaller pieces can often be done the same day if there's time. Bigger work needs a consultation and a drawing first.

Do you do black and gray Traditional?

Yes. Most of my Traditional work is in bold color, but I also do black and gray.
